(LOT 38)
1887 N172 Old Judge Art Whitney Dog With Paw On His Knee PSA 8 NM-MT

The light-hitting Art Whitney played 11 seasons on the left side of the infield for eight different teams including the New York Giants of the National League. Whitney's excellent fielding kept him in the lineup for 978 games as he led his league in fielding percentage four times, including setting a career-high .924 in 1887 with the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. In fact, his defensive WAR (Wins Above Replacement) remains fourth all-time in American Association history. Offered here is a unique 1887 N172 Old Judge Art Whitney Dog with Paw on his Knee in a PSA 8 holder. Given that the 1880s Old Judge expansive set is more than 135 years old, it is unbelievable how well-preserved this example of Art Whitney remains, displaying many of its original pack-fresh attributes. The sepia-toned image is clear as day with New York's third baseman crouching to perhaps play ball with the puppy in the image. The borders are dead-on, even offering a perfectly framed photo with expected, but evenly, touched edges and corners. The back is sharp and clean. This highest graded example is three full grades above the next high-grade example. If you collect the massive Old Judge set, this POP 1 highest graded Whitney issue is sure to upgrade your collection!
