T206 COBB - COBB BACK!!!...Historically speaking, the T206 Ty Cobb Ad Back tobacco card has been one of the hobby's most valuable and treasured rarities, as well as one of its biggest conundrums (with respect to its definitive issue status). The T206 Monster Set continues to suffice as the most renowned card collecting compilation, with four different Ty Cobb cards included in the set (Red & Green portrait; Bat On; Bat Off). While 15 different tobacco brands were issued for a myriad of the T206 subjects, there was only a single subject chosen for the rarest of all tobacco brands, the ever-elusive "TY COBB – KING OF THE SMOKING TOBACCO WORLD" green text ad back that was SOLELY reserved for the Red Portrait Ty Cobb card. It's now accepted as the rarest of all 16 tobacco brands and, save for the hallowed T206 Honus Wagner, the most coveted of all tobacco cards on the planet. Given Ty Cobb’s status as arguably the greatest hitter that ever lived, with his 12 batting titles and MLB-leading 4,189 hits at his retirement, Georgia Peach collectibles and keepsakes, specifically cards, are his most treasured legacies. With only 21 total 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait Ty Cobb backs ever encased by PSA, the POP 4 PSA 1.5 FAIR issue offered here is one of the scarcest cards on earth. This uniquely rare card of baseball’s best hitter has enjoyed decades in which it has achieved phenomenal prices, but it wasn’t until the “COVID years" that the Ty Cobb Red Portrait Ty Cobb ad back more than doubled in value with a PSA 4.5 VG-EX+ nearly within arm’s length of the million-dollar mark in 2020. The Ty Cobb Red Portrait with a Ty Cobb ad back does not often surface for sale in the hobby, making every opportunity one to upgrade a given collection. The rarity of the hobby offered here presents a bold background surrounding the Tyrus Cobb’s portrait pose with decent white borders that reveal even century-old-plus wear along the edging and the corners. The rounded corners display some paper loss on the back, but this gorgeous example stands tall and catches the eye with a brightness and sharpness overall that masks any defects or detractions. For a card that is more than 115 years old, especially of the greatest hitter of his time, Ty Cobb, this phenomenal offering is undoubtedly destined to be the centerpiece of even the most advanced and expansive collection.
