The 1965 Topps Football card set is one of the most attractive and desirable football sets in the hobby. It is also one of the most difficult to find in high-grade, considering the 2-1/2” x 4-11/16” size of these “Tall Boys”. With the Topps Company restricted to only producing AFL player cards (Philadelphia Gum Co. contracted with the NFL in 1965), the unique size helped to set the set apart from the mainstream gridiron issues and ultimately included 16 Hall of Fame players from the AFL, including Joe Willie Namath, the key rookie from this heralded set. Offered here is a near-complete graded 1965 Topps Football set (175/176), missing only #122 Joe Namath, sold in this auction as Lot 1627. This phenomenal assembly features football HOFers encapsulated by PSA, SGC and Beckett. Highlights include:
PSA 8: 3 Buoniconti, 69 Blanda, 139 Flores, 145 Otto, 155 Alworth & 168 Mix;
SGC 8: 91 Bell & 133 Biletnikoff RC;
BVG 7.5: 94 Buchanan;
PSA 7: 41 Shaw, 46 Brown RC, 99 Dawson, 109 Robinson & 116 Hill RC; and
PSA 6: 121 Maynard. A completely graded 1965 Topps Football near-set for any collectors to build around. Lot 1627 features the #122 Joe Namath Rookie to complete this superb offering.
Current estimated value of over $29,000.
