(LOT 50)
1953 Topps #244 Willie Mays SP PSA 7 NM

GIANT POTENTIAL!!!...
After winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1951, Willie Mays played in only 34 games in 1952 due to military service, yet Topps still issued a ‘53 Mays subject, presented here in a PSA 7 NM holder. While Mays did not play in the 1953 season due to military service, his 1953 Topps #244 subject gave his fan base hope for the upcoming 1954 season, a season in which Willie Mays would leave his indelible mark as the best in the game as he led the Giants to a World Series title. Mays returned to lead the NL in batting to earn not only an All-Star nod but his first of two NL MVP honors. With all due respect to his contemporaries, including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays was the undisputed best five-tool player of his generation. This magnificent Mays image boasts brightness under clean surfaces. In familiar fashion, the image is not perfectly centered, with only slight favoritism to the upper left corner. Square corners which only exhibit subtle touches, clean borders and very sharp edging for this PSA 7 beauty. This ‘53 Mays would certainly fill the void in your prized Say Hey Kid collection!
