(LOT 62)
1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle Gray Back PSA 8 NM-MT

MIGHTY MICKEY!!!...
No one was better than The Mick in '56. Not only did Mickey Mantle win the elusive Triple Crown, but his power numbers were some of the best ever. As the tenth ballplayer to capture the mythical headgear, his 52 home runs were the most ever by a Triple Crown winner. By the July 10th All-Star break, there must have been chatter about his threatening Ruth's 1927 60-home run record as he stood at 29 dingers for the Mid-Summer Classic. Unfortunately, The Mick only clouted five homers during the remainder of July and five more in September, with a phenomenal 13 in August, but it wasn't enough to catch Ruth. However, Mantle was named the American League MVP after leading the AL in runs (132), home runs (52), RBIs (130), batting (.353) and slugging (.705). He also posted a .990 fielding percentage with ten assists. The offered 1956 Topps #135 Mickey Mantle PSA 8 is also an MVP issue. Reflecting superior borders, edging and corners, this dual-image card of the Commerce Comet stands among the finest in the hobby. With impeccable surfaces and superb clarity, we can only assume that the slightest hint of OC favoring the left edge attests for this offering's NM-MT grade as opposed to MINT. A gorgeous example of an American Hero to be sure.
