In 1982, Stanford Cardinals QB John Elway and kicker Mark Harmon engineered one of the great comebacks in college football history against Cal, only to have their bowl-game hopes crushed by one of the most iconic plays ever in the NCAA, now known simply as "The Play". With the Cardinal down 19-17 within the final two minutes, with 4th-and-17 on their own 13-yard line, Elway drove the Cardinal down to Cal's 35, where Harmon hit, presumably, the game-winning field goal to ice it. However, on the very next play, Cal's unlikely kickoff return, which included five laterals and the band entering the field, will forever be remembered as "The Play". Despite the crushing defeat, John Elway embarked on one of the great NFL careers, starting in five and winning two Super Bowls. He was one of the hardest passers and best QB rushers of his time.
