MAGNIFICENT MARTIN!!!...Turbulence is a good word to call Billy Martin with the New York Yankees. Billy’s carousing, drinking and partying with Mickey Mantle and Whitey was legendary during his playing days. As a manager for five different stints, he went head-to-head with owner George Steinbrenner and famously in 1977 with superstar slugger Reggie Jackson in the dugout and on national television. But it wasn’t all tumult and chaos; Billy Martin was a part of four championships as a player and led the Yankees to the American League pennant in 1977 and a World Series title in 1978. Presented here is a 1953 Topps #86 Billy Martin (his second-year card) graded 9 MINT from PSA. Over the years, Memory Lane has seen its share of Martins from ’53, but it is hard to imagine that we have ever offered one finer than this. Featuring brilliant coloring of Billy’s portrait pose against a stadium background, virtual 50/50 centering, blood-drawing edges and corners, and only the most minor of touches at the lower right keeping it from a heralded GEM MINT 10 holder. This is questionably the highest graded issue in the hobby and one to upgrade your 1953 Topps set.
