When the Horrors of War trading card set was contrived in 1938 by Warren Bowman, president of Philadelphia Gum, Inc. (later Bowman) and George Moll, their vision was to promote peace, not war. However, the original 240-card set of graphic, gruesome and gory images of the dreadfulness of war caught the eye of President Franklin Roosevelt, who saw the set as a tool for him to propagandize what was occurring on his watch in Europe and around the globe in the early stages of World War II. The first series consisted of 240 Spanish Civil War, Ethiopian War, Chinese-Japanese War, and the Russian and Japanese conflicts in Manchuria issues, and an additional 48 cards were surrounding the escalating World War II, with three Hitler likenesses among the subjects. The high-number series (#252-288) cards are much scarcer as short prints, as they were not actively collected, making them much more difficult to acquire. Offered here is a collection of 65 “LUCKY” stamp back prize Horrors of War cards, all graded and holdered by CGC. These mid-to-low grade examples are extremely rare and all host a “You're Lucky! You Get A Package Of Cards Free" stamp over the original printed biography on the back. Highlights include #159 Mistake in Identity Causes Loyalist Slaughter CGC 5.5, #174 Women Propagandists Urge Chinese Patriotism CGC 5.5, #119 Wrecked Highway Brings Disaster to Foe and more. These rare “LUCKY” stamp backs are rarely seen, making this a unique opportunity for HOW collectors to snatch up the rare variations.
