Originally comprised of 240 cards, the 1938 Horrors of War set was produced to “teach peace by exposing the horrors of war” using intensely colored and often gruesome and gory images of the atrocities of war. Focused on the Spanish Civil, Ethiopian and Chinese-Japanese Wars initially, President Franklin Roosevelt saw the benefit in using these cards to help his cause in showing the American public the horrible things occurring overseas, so a second series of 48 was created to include the early days of World War II. Three of the most significant cards feature Adolf Hitler. Offered here is a group of 21 CGC-graded 1938 Horrors of War Promotional Overprint cards. Each card features a stamp on the reverse presenting the offer “1000 Cash Prizes To The 1000 Children Who Send Us The Neatest Lists Of 240 Correct Titles” and a push for kids to enjoy the “sensible chew” of the gum between meals. Each card has been holdered by CGC.
