1917 Chicago Cubs Owner Charles Weeghman Signed Check to Albert Lasker PSA/DNA Authentic
Albert Davis Lasker is known as the "father of modern advertising", who was the head of the advertising firm Lord & Thomas, where he not only revolutionized the advertising industry but significantly changed popular culture with the introduction of advertising on the radio and later on the television. Lasker was also active in politics, assisting Warren G. Harding in his presidential campaign in 1920, where he unleashed a broad-based advertising campaign, which used many advertising techniques that are now standard but were a first at the time for a presidential campaign. Weeghman was most likely hiring Lord and Thomas for advertising. A great piece of Cubs history.
Charles Weeghman acquired a controlling interest in the Cubs in 1916 and moved the Cubs into the team’s current home Wrigley Field (originally named Weeghman Park after Charles Weeghman, its builder). As part of the purchase of the Cubs, Weeghman turned to Albert Lasker, who he did not know personally at that time but was known in Chicago as someone who could raise money quickly. This offered check is dated in November 1917, is handwritten to Albert Lasker for $22,500, is signed by Charles Weeghman, and is hand endorsed by Albert Lasker of Lord & Thomas. An incredible find that may very well be part of the history of the ownership of the Chicago Cubs.
