1917 Chicago Cubs Owner Charles Weeghman Signed Check Endorsed by Cubs Player Jimmy Sheckard PSA/DNA Authentic
After his 17-year playing career in the National League, Jimmy Sheckard served as a coach for the Chicago Cubs under manager Fred Mitchell. Offered here is a July 31, 1917 dated check signed by Charles Weeghman, then-owner of the Cubs, to Jimmy Sheckard in the amount of $500. Weeghman and secretary Walter Craighead have signed on the face in black fountain pen and Sheckard has endorsed the back in blue fountain pen.
Jimmy Sheckard was an exceptional early 20th century baseball player, who won the World Series with the Cubs in 1907 and 1908, led the National League in home runs in 1903, and was the National League stolen base leader in both 1899 and 1903. Sheckard is also known for some interesting feats, including the first and only player in the history of baseball to hit inside the park grand slams in two consecutive games. He led the league in 1911 with 147 walks, which was a major league record until broken by Babe Ruth in 1920 but remains a Cubs team record to this day. He is one of only four players in the modern era (1900-present) to hold this record along with Ruth, Jack Crooks, and Barry Bonds. Sheckard was also the first player to lead the league in home runs and steals in the same season (1903) with Ty Cobb and Chuck Kline as the only other two players to achieve such an achievement in the history of the game. Sheckard was also an elite fielder and holds the record for double plays as a left fielder (1911 with 12 double plays for the Cubs) and right fielder (1899 with 14 double plays for the Orioles). He is also the all-time leader among left fielders in assists, with 243.
