(LOT 1604)
Chicago Cubs V.P. Jon O. Seys Check to Player John Malloy for $68.60 in 1919 PSA/DNA Authentic

This check has been written by Chicago Cubs Vice President to player John Malloy for $68.60 on July 25th, 1919. John O. Seys, the Cubs Vice-President, had joined the Cubs in 1917/18 as their traveling secretary after being a sportswriter for the Chicago Daily News for 16 years and later became the Cubs VP in 1919. A great check from the early 1900s.

John Michael “Mique” Malloy was a baseball player in the early 1900s and found his way into scouting after his playing career had concluded. Malloy became a footnote in the battle between the Federal League and the American and National Leagues, when in April of 1914 he filed a $2,000 lawsuit against the Cubs claiming he was not paid by the team for helping to sign a couple of the players.  The suit must have been settled amicably as Malloy returned to the Cubs scouting staff after the Federal League folded, where he remained for several years until just after World War I, when he entered the business for which he was best known, boxing promotion. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Malloy was a prominent boxing promoter in Chicago. Malloy, Paddy Harmon (the man responsible for building Chicago Stadium), and Jim Mullen were involved in every major fight that took place in Chicago. At various times Malloy was closely associated with champions Primo Carnera, John Henry Lewis, and Henry Armstrong.
