(LOT 1605)
1917 Chicago Cubs Owner Charles Weeghman $74.55 Signed Check Endorsed by Phil Douglas PSA/DNA Authentic
Shufflin' Phil, named for the slow pace with which he walked from the bullpen to the mound, was a skilled pitcher in the early 1900s but struggled with alcoholism. His throwing error in Game 4 of the 1918 World Series gave Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. In 1920 Douglas had a 2.71 ERA and following the season, the spitball was banned for all players except Douglas and 16 others. A rare Cubs check indeed.
