OL' SATCH!!!...Born Leroy Robert Page, nicknamed "Satchel" because in an early job he carried multiple suitcases using a pole at the Mobile train station. However, being a porter was not his destiny, as he became one of the most feared pitchers in all of baseball, no matter the league. Over four decades on the mound, which included the Negro Leagues, Major League Baseball, barnstorming and pick-up games, Paige allegedly appeared in more than 2,500 games, posted 2,000+ wins, threw for over 250 teams and tossed 250 shutouts … according to Satchel. He had a 6-1 record with a 2.48 ERA that year for Cleveland, and the Indians won the World Series. His final appearance came in an official game in 1965, when he pitched three scoreless innings for the Kansas City A's against the Boston Red Sox, allowing only one hit. He was 59 years old. Presented here is Paige's 1949 Bowman #224 issue graded 8 NM-MT by SGC. This portrait card offers the finest imaginable contrast and resolution, set against a pristine cool green background. Virtually perfect centering, four super clean off-white borders, and pinpoint corners complete an outstanding frame, and both surfaces have eluded any glaring blemishes. This example merits the utmost attention from any advanced world-class collectors based upon its impeccable "pack-fresh" aesthetics!
