“You never get anywhere in golf playing only four times a week.” Every golfer on earth would agree to that sentiment if the love of the game coursed through his or her veins. Interestingly, that quote came from the greatest ballplayer to ever step foot only a baseball diamond, Babe Ruth. After his 22 years in a big-league uniform, The Babe retired to a life of personal appearances, fishing and, of course, golf. The Babe was a single-digit player with an impressive 5 handicap. In fact, Ruth won multiple trophies on the links and many of his trophies remain on display in the Babe Ruth room at Cooperstown. One of Ruth’s frequent clubs, especially during his playing days, was the now-defunct St. Alban’s Golf Club, once located in Queens, New York. Presented here is a signed check to St. Alban’s, inked G.H. Ruth and encapsulated Authentic by PSA/DNA. This $231.50 check from 1936 suggests that golf and perhaps drinks were on The Babe this day, as this is a steep cost for a round in 1936.
