More often than not, photographs of Lou Gehrig display the New York Yankees first baseman at the plate or in a jovial candid shot, the latter of which photographer Charles Conlon was particularly adept at. With the legendary shutterbug, Charles Colon, handling the New York beat, images of Yankees and Giants from the era were synonymous with the famed photographer, who not only caught ballplayers in the act but also the essence of their personalities in close-ups and sideline poses. When a photo of Henry Louis Gehrig fielding does surface, he is often seen scooping up a grounder, adding to his 19,000+ putouts at first. Known more for his plate presence, Gehrig was also an exceptional fielder, retiring with a .991 fielding percentage. The offered 7-1/2” x 10-1/2" Baseball Magazine photograph features the Iron Horse lunging for a high liner rather than a grounder, and Lou Gehrig has signed the image beneath his parted legs as he stays on the bag while reaching for the ball. Signed in black fountain pen, this 15” x 18” framed magazine photo is one deserving of a lot of attention, as this pose is rarely if ever seen. "Henry Louis Gehrig" is boldly centered along the bottom matting between the “Published by Baseball Magazine Company, New York” and "Enlarged from original photograph By C.M. Conlon, N.Y.”
