(LOT 1587)
1919 Chicago Cubs Tommy McCarthy Endorsed Cancelled Check PSA/DNA Authentic

Early baseball pioneer and Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy endorsed this check from 1919. McCarthy, a prolific base stealer, played in the late 1800s and is credited with inventing the concept of the hit-and-run. McCarthy played at a time when baseball was in its infancy, playing for the likes of the Boston Beaneaters (eventually becoming the Atlanta Braves), the Philadelphia Quakers (now the Philadelphia Phillies), the St. Louis Browns (eventually becoming the Baltimore Orioles), and the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (eventually becoming the Dodgers).

Tommy McCarthy is most famous for his time with the Boston Beaneaters, when he teamed up with Hugh Duffy to form the "Heavenly Twins" from 1892-1895. McCarthy and Duffy won two National League titles together. McCarthy is the only member of the Hall of Fame that played in the short-lived Union Association, where he played with the Boston Reds at the start of his career in 1884. After his playing career ended, McCarthy remained in the game as a coach for various colleges and professional clubs. This check is from 1919 and was likely paid to McCarthy by the Cubs for his services. McCarthy became ill in 1921 and passed away in 1922, making his autograph exceptionally scarce. The signed endorsement on this offered check is one of the highest quality we have seen.
