Though Grover Cleveland Alexander lacked the refinement of his contemporaries, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson, when the Nebraska farm boy took the mound, his delivery and pitching prowess were unmistakably graceful and magnificent. After two short seasons in the minors, Grover landed with the Philadelphia Phillies and posted an incredible rookie campaign with league leads in wins (28), complete games (31) and shutouts (7). From 1913 to 1920 with Philadelphia and the Chicago Cubs, Old Pete was virtually untouchable, going 188-84 with 1,290 strikeouts and a 1.89 ERA, as well as 219 complete games and 67 shutouts. Alexander was an absolute workhorse wherever he pitched, as he posted 436 complete games with 90 shutouts in 600 starts. In 1926, he won a World Series with St. Louis. Following his 1921 season, when he led the NL in shutouts for the seventh and final time, Grover signed this contract with the Chicago Cubs on October 17, 1921. He has signed on the front “G. C. Alexander” in black fountain pen and President of the National League “John Heydler” has been stamped in blue at the bottom. Page 2 presents a typewritten and edited contract with “Chicago National League Ball Club” and his 1922 salary of $12,000. Page 3 again features his signature with Cubs president “William L. Veeck” and “Grover C. Alexander” on the closing contract lines in black fountain pen. This brilliant relic from the old days of baseball is remarkably well-kept, featuring the three-time pitching Triple Crown winner who is tied with Mathewson for most victories in National League history (373), Grover C. Alexander.
